January 2026 Newsletter
Big Salty Range RO / SLPSA Member Update – January 2026
Welcome to the new year! We are proud that SLPSA is a top 3 USPSA club by participation, and a top 10 SCSA club by participation.
Our SLPSA, SASS, SCSA,, NRL, UML and other clubs and participants as well as Big Salty Range
RO’s, training classes, and other participants safely fired well over three million rounds in
competition and events in 2025.
We hope that as a member you will continue to promote a safe shooting environment all year.
Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the 2026 rules posted at www/bigsalty.org/rules, as
well as the requirements to maintain RO access to the range for those of you who are RO’s.
We have been working hard to update the website as well as our member communications and
will be regularly updating members and participants going forward.
Update on 5.56 Policy
5.56 rifles will be re-allowed in competition with limitations from April through October,
(pending ice conditions on the range) with restrictions for safe stage design, reload policies,
round count, and movement. Match directors for competitions where this is relevant are up to
speed with the requirements. Exceptions to the time frame may be considered, with SLPSA
Board approval.
NOTE: SLPSA MATCH STAGE RULE
IF A SLPSA MATCH STAGE IS SET UP IN A BAY THAT YOU HAVE RESERVED, UNLESS YOU ARE THE STAGE BUILDER, OR A MATCH OFFICIAL REVIEWING A BUILD,
YOU MAY NOT TOUCH, SHOOT, MODIFY, OR OTHERWISE DISTURB THE STAGE IN ANY MANNER. THIS
INCLUDES NOT SHOOTING ANY POPPERS, PROPS, TARGETS, WALLS OR OTHER CLUB PROPERTY. ANY
VIOLATORS WILL RECEIVE A 30 DAY SUSPENSION OF RO PRIVILEGES AT THE BIG SALTY RANGE, AND MAY
BE SUSPENDED FROM THE SLPSA COMPETITION FOR WHICH THE STAGE IS SET.
This rule has been implemented after repeated issues that have caused match delays, re-shoots, extreme damage to stage walls, props, and other issues. If you have reserved a bay with an RO reservation, you can shoot your own targets, outside the stage, using your own stands/targets/sticks, while ensuring you do not shoot any part of the set up stage.
2026 Elections
Our annual elections were held at the final December 2025 match with approximately 80% of
the votes approving the updated club by-laws, and re-electing the SLPSA Board of Directors.

Reminder- Commercial Video & Social Media Use
A hot topic with the new 2026 RO contracts involves the fact that the state DNR (owner of the
land upon which the range is situated) has restrictions and requirements on “commercial”
filming on the range. The following is a requirement from the state DNR.
Here’s the bottom line: Permission is required from the state DNR for any filming done which results in financial gain.
This means match, or personal training footage you use from, say, a hat cam,
that you then upload to your personal, non-monetized Instagram, TikTok, FB, or YouTube, etc.,
is OK as long as the video is not monetized. On the other hand, if you want to use it for a
sponsor, for example, you need to get permission, and your SLPSA/Big Salty reps can help.
In addition, a professional instructor using video to review student performance as part of a paid
class is NOT required to get permission- because they already have permission to film as part of
their Big Salty Range Event contract. They (or their students) could therefore also use the video
for any of their monetized social media.
If you are using the range as a Big Salty RO, with a standard RO reservation, OR you are a match
participant in a club match at Big Salty, and plan to use any video or still photos for a monetized
purpose, that is when you would need to get permission from the state DNR. Again, your BSR/SLPSA representatives can help.
Please note that any video or photography must comply with all Big Salty Range safety rules and SLPSA match rules. Filming or photography must never interfere with safety operations, match flow, or other shooters. Please note violation of this rule may result in loss of RO privileges.
Reminder: Using your BSR RO Position as a professional or paid trainer
Your Big Salty RO position DOES NOT allow you to charge, in any way, for informal or professional training of guests at Big Salty Range with a normal RO reservation. If you wish to train people in exchange for any type of compensation, an event application is required each and every time you wish to perform such services.
